CATAN Editorial Review
The Settlers of Catan Family Edition board game is a version that comes with wooden pieces including roads, buildings and the robber. The hexagonal tiles are not wooden but made of thick card. This game is an expansion that requires the Catan Board Game to be played. The game board in this edition comes in six reversible sections instead of the 20+ individual hex tiles in the original, which makes set up quicker and simpler but limits the possible number of game layouts. The family edition has large sections containing several hexagons on each making it easier for younger players to set up the board on their own. The game has an element of complexity that makes it enjoyable for kids and adults. The gameplay comes down to luck to some extent but also involves trading and strategic decision-making. The rules are easy enough for a six-year-old to understand, and the game can be completed in a reasonable timescale.
